My life on the internet.

Ok, so LJ is clearly taking up all of my free time :)

Seriously, though, it's hard for me to justify spending time keeping LJ, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter..etc.,etc. all up to date. Facebook (clearly) is getting the most attention. I've managed to sync my Twitter and Facebook Status, so I feel good about that for the time being. I can put widgets on here and Myspace to show my Twitter status as well. I could dupe my blog posts to FB and Myspace (hell, even Orkut or Blogger).

But redundancy... is it good?? Especially for those of you checking out all these things in RSS... the duplication has got to be annoying.

My feeling is that people gravitate towards one service, most likely, and I want to make sure they get some love without needing to switch over to my favorite.

Back in the day, each service only handled one aspect of the social interweb -- that is, facebook didn't handle blog posts, etc. Now there's Facebook Notes and Status, and widgets for everything under the sun.

It's all a bit overwhelming.

Long range goal, for now: Blog with LJ, have those posts appear in FB (but not duplicated)... keep status with Twitter (maybe switch to Jaiku if I ever get an invite - hint hint) but have it duped over to FB Status.... and perhaps avoid Myspace altogether (lol). I have no idea what I'm talking about though.

Love, Ryan

(Yay! A post by me, aren't you proud?)
P.S. If you don't FB, John and I bought a house in Nashville, yay! You should come visit.

Life in Nashville!

Time for a brief update. The details are sketchy, you you'll have to call me for the rest :-) You should, in fact, call me. Or catch me online, or e-mail me....

John and I are now settled, for the most part, in Nashville. We are renting a house with a fantastic roommate. I can see the office building where I work from the window. I work on West End, and my commute is a 2 minute walk. Yay.

I work for Vandy, and I'm doing that thing that I do :-) and I'm getting paid for it... which is really good, because being poor is getting old.

The hilights, as I can remember them, of the last month...
- one fantastic trip to Mexico. pics on request.
- John works in a place where he has to wear an orange apron. :) They have benefits available for both of us... (in fact, both of our jobs do.) We're waiting on residency to be established so he can be back in school.
- We ate lots of cheescake and saved the rest in a specially prepared leftovers icechest -- Jeeka's so smart!
- We saw a fantastic concert at the Belcourt with Duncan Sheik and Vienna Teng. I was unfamiliar with Vienna, but she's completely fabulous.
- I verified that in fact, as etymologically weird as it is, the word "forte" is pronounced for-tay. That's been bothering me for 6 years now, and I'll sleep a bit easier. Check.
- Jeeka and I remembered that the skeletons in Dr. J's class were named Morpheus and Pericles.
- We've been dancing at the clubs of "ill-repute" (so says my hot Canadian friend.) At times very fun, creepy (old man grabbing john...), hot, intimidating (almost over that), ridiculous... but mostly a good time.
- How's this for TMI -- A colonoscopy may sound like no fun, but really, compared to a flexible sigmoidoscopy, it's just dandy. You're out cold. I've had the unfortunate pleasure of both. The good news... I don't have cancer. Instead I get the talented and beautiful 'ulcerative proctitis'. Don't bother looking it up, it's boring and basically just inflammation.
- Oh! oh! Greenhouse bar is nifty.
- I've had no opportunity to catch up with anyone still in the area. I want to. Things are starting to become more stable around here, so we should hang out. We need to get in touch.
- Meds! In the tradition of Ryan shares everything (when he talks at all) I'm on Cymbalta. The effect is subtle, but I have less trouble getting out of bed and I feel way more balanced. I should have started YEARS ago, as there's no good reason to go through life unhappy. I don't feel perfect, but things are definitely more managable. I just mentioned it to my regular doctor (Paige is awesome...) and was quickly set up with a month supply for free. Free is good.

My roommate just brought me some cheezy garlic bread that has a striking resemblance to the stuff they had at FHS... you know, the REALLY greasy kind. Yummy. Though nothing compares to Chicken Ring Things mixed with Hickory Smoked Fritos and spicy Cheetos (with 3 packets of salt). Oooh, or a bag of those sour multicolored things that we often had to bump the vending machine get dispensed (eh, K2?)

Alright, how's that for an update? I love and miss you all.
~Ryan

NASHVILLE BOUND. NEED JOB. ;)

I'm a crappy livejournal user. I also suck at myspace. I occasionally check facebook, so I guess I don't totally suck at that.

Here's what I've been up to lately: visited K-ville to see Cassie and appraise DI Global Finals; got some new sexy underwear; contemplated an eyebrow piercing (decided against it); tossed out all of the socks John and I have been accumulating and replaced them with shiny new ones that ALL match; received a box of things from my friend in Canada that included Canadian socks, flags, pencils, stickers, and magnets; listened to Dani California a few too many times; viewed and enjoyed Pixar's Cars; created my largest graphic ever... an 8'x10' display board; continued working on a bunch of websites.... (that started out exciting and ended kind of dull, didn't it?)

oh yeah, I graduated, yay! and as much as I hate to admit it, I kinda am ready for more school... (unless I can find a really great job!)

finally, John and I are moving to Nashville at the end of this month (or somewhere in that general area.) We still need jobs and a place to live. It's somewhat more organized than that, but at this point we only have temporary housing and income. Any ideas for a web designer/developer who wouldn't mind doing just about anything creative/computer related? or for John, experienced as a restaurant general manager who is anxious to be out of that world? :)

Yes, there's more for sure, but it's 1:15pm and I haven't even managed to get dressed yet... cheers!

Ryan

In other news... a new iBook is rumored to be close to release. It will likely be called the MacBook (to parallel the MacBook Pro name currently used by the professional series). It's expected to have a 13" widescreen display, built in iSight, magnetic-release power cord (that would have saved me a bunch of repairs...), and possibly an entirely magnetic latching system (... that is, no latch at all).

The 17" Intel MacBook Pro is also expected to come out soon.

Macs Running Windows

Eeek... Apple's economic situation be damned, it's still just plain wrong.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

A few amusing points made:

"EFI and BIOS
Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries."

(Sadly? I don't think Apple would be too thrilled to have the Mac OS booting on a PC natively... )

"Word to the Wise
Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes."

(Yes, yes, we know macs aren't invulnerable... just overlooked... but we can still take our no-need for virus protection, built in kick-ass firewall, no active-x exploits for granted a bit longer.)

Ryan

I'm always in a hurry it seems, but I've been dying to share this because I'm an attention whore.

1. I got my very first piercing... my left nipple :-) I have been wanting one FOREVER, in case you didn't know... and I love it! Kudos to Saint Tattoo in Knoxville for being all around awesome. I may post a pic at some point (there is one on facebook)... or you can just ask to see it (once again, I'm an attention whore). I'm pleased at the reactions I've been getting (generally... shock... yay!)

2. Wordpress :-) Coming soon on a ryanhuber.com/journal website near you. You'll still be able to read my uber-frequent posts on LJ through the wonders of RSS (or so I am told).

3. Newish ryanhuber.com . Flash is fun.

4. Applying for work is not fun.

Anyway! I love you all.
Ry

Ryan and the Dept. of Music at Ole Miss

Curious as to my whereabouts lately?

I've been busy (that kind of busy that mysteriously happens when you're taking the smallest course-load ever - bah!)

Just this evening (surprise!) the Department of Music at The University of Mississippi (I am told that the "The" is necessary and must be capitalized) launched their new website... one of my own design that I have been working feverishly at to execute. I am happy because it uses some neat CSS drop down menus, alpha transparency in PNGs (complete with some clever scripting of not-my-own-design to make it work in older browsers) and is very accessible. Check it out. Congratulations for navigating that long and meandering paragraph. :-)

In other news -- I'm going to bed. Oh yes, and taking late night jobs that coincide with 8 am classes is a bad idea (in case you were wondering.)

Miss you all!
Ryan

2:13 AM Post!

My favorite time to work (and therefore also my most productive time) is midnight - 5:00AM. Weird, I know.

I'm writing this as I impatiently wait for Dreamweaver to "check-in" the files I've been working on (this check-in/check-out system makes sure I don't overwrite the other developers' work). Yes, Dreamweaver folks.... but don't worry, just because I have to use it for this one project doesn't mean I like it. I still just flip over to "code" and pretend the whole WYSIWYG thing doesn't exist... Yes, I'm a web designer/developer snob. Next thing you know, you'll be hearing me complain about table driven site layouts (... not now though, because I still have several sites waiting to be converted to CSS based layouts) ;-)

At least there's nothing to *really* complain about right now. Poor Jeeka's about heard enough of me complaining about non-standards compliant browsers. ("Damn you Salizar!")

In other news... I'm thinking about doing Audio blogs... really I figure no one reads/cares about what I write anyway, so why not switch to something more convenient for me. I could even syndicate it... and... ::hesitates::.... podcast it. We're not talking a radio-type-show here, though... just me talking to people I know and a few crazy stalkers (Shoutout to all you crazy stalker folks! Woo woo!)

Sounds like a really dumb idea... so I'm sure you'll be hearing more about it. eh... eh... (I have this idea involving k7.net's free voicemail e-mailing software and a couple applescripts and a php script to generate the feed... coupled with hosting it locally on my nifty apache server (yay osx), some clever (or...well, obvious) port forwarding at my router, and a dynamic dns forwarding account (also free and totally useful).... anyway, we'll see.

I think time goes by faster during these hours because my brain functions slower. What is the time-keeping portion of the brain anyway? (An Exciting Article on the Subject!) Oooh specious present.

....oooh....want digital camera.... must feed exhibitionism....

Anyway! Back to work!
Ryan

..... a cursory adaptation of the grammatically incorrect freetranslation.com :-)

Update

3 quick clarifications/updates:

1 - Things are getting better... despite the fact that yesterday we discovered that the dishwasher leaks (and oh boy did it leak) and the fact that a water pipe burst in the apartment above us, sending a fair amount of nasty smelling water dripping upon our new bathroom decor. Err. Still no shower, still running toilet... but these things are supposed to be fixed soon. Maybe they'll give us a break in the water bill. Probably not!

2 - I have a really nifty friend from Canada that I met at DI. Yay!

3 - I am staying with John as much as I can until school starts in fall... then I will be coming and going... as frequently as I can.

The Times

I hate to do this, I really do.

But I'm doing it anyway.

An "I'm depressed" journal entry... in the style of Ryan circa 1998 (1999, 2000, and 2001 were applicable years as well).

Anyway, I am. The sucky kind, too, (as opposed to the other kind) where you can't quite identify what it is that's pulling you down - mostly because there are so many things not going the way you want them to go.

So - anyway - I'm in Jackson, MS now with John. We had a big ordeal with him not being able to move in to the apartment he was supposed to move in to (they called us as we were moving stuff down there -- apparently the previous owner had a dog with fleas, so they were canceling his lease agreement and transferring him to another complex - unless he wanted to upgrade to a slightly larger apartment for far more than he could afford).... then we found out that the new apartment, which we were told was ready, was not going to be ready in fact for about 6 hours... john breaks down numerous times (he hates moving as it is)... finding out that the new apartment had various problems (really stained carpet, a very curious odor, rude staff, and, as we found out the next morning, a completely dysfunctional shower)... followed by making another 6 hour trip back and forth from Oxford in the middle of the night... finally getting the last of John's belongings inside at about 1:30 AM.... falling asleep and waking up again at 7:00AM so John could go off to his first day of work. I should reorganize that paragraph and fix the sentence structure.... but I'm not going to.

I spent all day trying to be Mr. "everything's going to be ok" guy... the next day I lost it... in the middle of Olive Garden, no less. It was a sight to see, I'm sure.

John and I have been so frustrated with Oxford so many times... so little to do, etc... but now we're here, and every day something comes up about Oxford and we both get teary (like I am now). Jackson isn't a huge city, but it's much less personal... something I thought I wanted... (all this is related to the fact that John is at work constantly and I have nothing to do but work).

I don't work very well when I'm upset.

I'm also upset about money. If I could work more, I'd have more of it...

I know this is one of those things where I just need to be slapped and told to get over it. I will. I just need more human interaction maybe.

So, there you have it. My apologies.
Come visit me.

Ryan

Update

Hey folks, I'm gonna try again with the whole update thing. (For some reason livejournal posting has been far less satisfying for me recently than it used to be...)

The big news:
John was offered a promotion... a job as general manager (i.e. head man, totally in charge) of a Moe's (yes, the relatively small southwest grill chain that he applied to work for 2 years ago with no idea what kind of restaurant he was getting into) Apparently they like him :-) So... unfortunately the new head manager position is for a Moe's in Madison, MS ... 2.5 hrs south of Oxford.

He had to take the job. We both knew it. Moe's isn't exactly his dream job... but he is very happy with it -- for a quick/casual restaurant the food is of a high standard of quality and freshness, and the restaurant's atmosphere is fun. The doors that this job could open for him... (his future plans still include culinary school and restaurants... of a slightly less casual varietay.) Should he stick with Moe's, they have already promised him a raise after getting a bit more business to the store... in addition, they have suggested that he will have his own store at the location of his choosing by age 23, and in charge of multiple Moe's' by the time he's 25. Whoa.

So, the bad part... obviously... is that it means John will not be living with me. If only I had taken the 3 classes I need to graduate last year (bangs head on desk). This sounds silly, especially considering I have friends with significant others living much farther away... but the truth is...

It's going to be very hard. I'm confident we'll make things work... but we have been together constantly for about three and a half years now... and the idea of spending the majority of a year apart makes me fairly nauseous.

I've revised my class schedule to allow me a solid 3 day weekend. I'll be back and forth a lot. That should help.

He starts in less than 2 weeks.

After I graduate... btw... we are hoping to jump on the marriage-or-something-like-it plan. I have no idea how that's supposed to work legally, socially, etc.... Stay tuned for more details. :)

So, there you go.
Ryan

Inappropriate Behavior

1. John and I go to McDonald's for breakfast (mistake #1)... it's raining and we're in a hurry so we do the drive thru thing.

2. We order. I accidentally order McGriddles (gross - syrup flavoring and eggs?)

3. They inform us that it will be an extra 3 minutes and ask us to pull forward and wait for them to bring out the food.

4. We comply.

5. About 10 minutes later, we are wondering what's going on. We look back at the McDonald's front door (which is glass) and notice an employee holding our food and knocking on the door.... that is, the McDonald's door.... on the inside....

6. John and I stare.

7. This employee motions for us to come and get our food so that she can get back to her very important work... rather impolitely... with a look that says "how dare you suggest that I take your food to you in the rain, I might mess up my hair" (even though we are in the drive thru line).

8. John gets out and gets food from said employee after we stare a bit longer and she makes rude gestures (indicating "come here right now or else I'm going to throw this bag of McGriddles away").

End of story :-) P.S. After having McGriddles I can conclusively say that everything on their menu is nasty.

a time to choose.

So... everyone tells me that it's ok to not know what I want to do for a living, but frankly....

a) I have to make money to pay bills once I graduate.
b) I could graduate at the end of this summer or at the end of next year (depending of course on how long I want to put off said decision).
c) EVERYTHING I am even remotely interested in requires more SPECIALIZED education.

I'm contemplating drawing it out of a hat.... my future career, that is. It would be a fun story to tell the grandkids :)

Perhaps you'd like to help me out. My printmaking instructor says that I definitely belong in education (ah... but teaching what?) My parents don't want me to stop considering medicine (but what field? and what to do about my inability to stomach blood?) and what about graphic design, which I liked up until last week, and suddenly became irritated with?

I always assumed there would be one thing I would become extraordinarily passionate about... and for a while I was just passionate about everything. Now... I kinda don't care about anything (with pretty much equal levels of apathy). Or maybe that's just right this second.

I wanted to be the best at what I did. I seem to make these career ambition leaps when I feel that that is not possible. Of course, to be the best would require some sort of commitment (at some point) surely.

Two degrees doesn't feel like enough. Is that weird?

Am I just avoiding the "real" world? It does scare me...

There is no guarantee for success... something I chose to ignore in the past...

that scares me, too.

*Yes, I'm listening to Celine -- but I didn't exactly choose it, and I'm far too lazy to change it (but not too lazy to write about it). Oh hell, I like it anyway :-)
